This year, I have added quite many new kitchen gadgets in my kitchen, I even had a kitchen makeover with all new appliances. Anyway, here are some of my new kitchen toys that I really like. I use them a lot, if not on a daily basis, and they are my trusted brands for culinary inspirations. I recommend them as my holiday gift guide for this year. Happy shopping this holiday season! Nespresso U Espresso Machine Mr. Rasa Malaysia enjoys a good cup of espresso and coffee, and Nespresso U machine is our choice. I am not much a coffee drinker but I actually enjoy my cup of espresso from this machine. You can enjoy fast, streamlined one-touch brewing and superb espresso with this compact single-cup machine. It is ideal for small kitchens with limited space as the the U features a movable water tank that you can position on either the machine’s back or side plus a magnetic drip tray you can switch from the front to the side for the best fit in your kitchen. Nespresso U works exclusively with Nespresso’s premium coffee capsules (16 are included with the purchase) for locked-in freshness and convenience. If there is one espresso machine you buy, this is it. Anolon 10-piecce Set Nouvelle Copper Stainless Steel I have many cookware sets in my kitchen: non-stick, bronze non-stick, carbon steel non-stick, etc. Earlier this year, I have decided to stop using non-stick cookware set in my kitchen. The reason is simple: the non-stick layer of teflon coating eventually get scratched and come off. I switched to Anolon 10-piecce Set Nouvelle Copper Stainless Steel and absolutely love the set. I don’t have to worry about getting teflon into our foods, especially my son’s food. What’s more, this 10-piece set will bring a look of elegance and style...

Growing up in Malaysia has made me a proud polyglot, as I fluently speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, English, and Hokkien. And now as baby G continues to build his language skills (which unfortunately now includes phrases such as “Mama, I don’t like fish!”), it becomes more and more important for me to expose him to as many languages as possible. These days, it seems that modern technology has made it possible for me to do so while still living in the US. My friends at toojuice.com have created a delightful and graphically beautiful app that helps young children learn basic vocabulary in foreign languages called Gus on the Go. You may also know one of them as Alice from the Eat a Duck I Must! food blog. Alice and I share the same intense love of languages and this app has already done wonders for baby G and her baby Ducks. You may also read about her touching story behind developing this app in her blog post about Gus on the Go. Baby G absolutely loves this app and so do I. It’s interactive, educational, intuitive AND addictive. We’ve been playing through Gus on the Go in Mandarin Chinese and Hong Kong Cantonese and we can’t get enough of it. Of course my favorite lessons are the market food and the kitchen scene. It’s important to me that baby G knows the essential fruits and vegetables. And with the fun interactive scenes, baby G has picked up the food vocab in no time! Hmmm, maybe I can get them to release Gus on the Go: Malay? Pretty please? For those of you with young children, do not hesitate to buy this app! With 10 interactive lessons and a bounty of fun vocabulary games, the value of this app extends well...

Other than The Cosmopolitan Las Vegas, one of the highlights of our recent trip to Las Vegas was a Malaysian & Thai restaurant called SATAY. It’s not easy to come across a good Malaysian restaurant in the United States, even in California. It was a pleasant surprise when we dined out at SATAY as we thoroughly enjoyed the authentic flavors of home. SATAY was started by a Malaysian family who immigrated to the United States. The menu offers a great selection of classic Malaysian dishes as well as Thai dishes. After a few days of heavy buffet dining, I was craving for Malaysian street food and noodles. We had a company of four people so it allowed us to order all the Malaysian dishes I had been craving. We started out with chicken and beef satay. The satay were a cross-over between Malaysian and Thai satay. I loved the chunkier peanut sauce (which is iconic to Malaysian satay sauce), but the Thai cucumber salad offered a refreshing taste to the meat. Next up was the Char Kuey Teow, which is Malaysian fried flat noodles. This dish is hard to replicate at home because regular gas range just doesn’t cut it when it comes to the elusive wok hei (breath of wok). The noodles and succulent shrimp were nicely charred, with just the right amount of heat. No Malaysian meal is complete without a piping hot bowl of curry laksa and my favorite Penang Hokkien Mee (prawn noodle soup), so we all shared these two legendary Malaysian street food fares. It was utterly gratifying to slurp the noodles while sipping the fiery hot curry broth. I also loved the bouncy fish balls and fried tofu puffs. A quick look at the Penang Hokkien Mee soup base, I knew that it would...

I am a huge fashion, beauty, travel, and lifestyle buff. My life motto is to enjoy “all the good things in life,” and in my dictionary, it means indulgence in the best of fashion, beauty, travel, food, and lifestyle. A few days ago, I was invited to a Kick Off To Fashion’s Night Out featuring Barbara Bui, at the trendy SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. It was a private dinner and fashion show, hosted in Saam by José Andrés. Barbara Bui’s simple, effortless elegance and chic collections have been making waves in Los Angeles since the opening of its flagship store in Beverly Hills last year. I was extremely thrilled to attend the event. The theme of the night was “A Taste of Fashion,” with immaculate pairing of fashion and food. The eclectic pairing menu was a collaboration between the chef and renowned fashion expert Melissa Magsaysay (former style editor for the LA Times). During each course, the chef, and Melissa, each presented their unique contributions to the menu, providing insight into their philosophies and inspirations behind the evening’s fashion, food and wine selections. It was a flawless execution throughout the lovely evening. Here are some of the pictures of the event. Backstage. The models getting ready for the event. The guests sharing the delicious Oxtail Steamed Buns. The models with the gorgeous Barbara Bui Fall/Winter 2012 collection and accessories. I love the outfit and the handbag! Some of the best dishes of the evening: Beet Meringue. The best meringue ever. This Philly Cheesesteak was pure perfection in terms of texture, taste, and creativity. Uni and Eel Rice. Barbara Bui established her eponymous label in 1987 in Paris. Barbara Bui is also a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Francaise et des Créateurs de Mode. The designer has...

In June, some of you thought that you saw me and my family on TV, in the very popular HGTV program House Hunters International. You’re right. We are in the Family Reunion in Penang, Malaysia episode. The show premiered on June 27th. We didn’t tell anyone because it was the first time we watched the show on TV and I wanted to make sure that we didn’t look like complete dorks and hence we kept it to ourselves. However, 10 minutes into the show, we received emails, text messages, tweets, Facebook messages, etc. from friends, ex-colleagues, old neighbors, university roommates, fans and readers from all over the United States that they were watching us on TV! It’s amazing just how popular the show is. The episode will rerun again on August 10, Friday (check your local listing for air time). Tune in to watch, or DVR it, and let me know what you think. If you can’t view it this time, more reruns will be scheduled. We filmed the episode earlier this year, in April. We had so much fun working with the very talented crew in both Penang and Irvine. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, more importantly, I was so psyched that I was able to show the viewers a glimpse of Penang, my hometown, the place that I forever left my heart in. Other than house hunting, you get to follow me to the market, shopping for ingredients, eating and making Penang street food (I helped the street vendor making kuih dadar), and checking out some of the sights in Penang. Plus, there are a ton of cuteness-overload scenes of little G. Here are some of the behind-the-scenes photos in Penang. Baby G and Mr Rasa Malaysia at the Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang. Baby G looks so cute...

Greetings from Penang! It’s been a month since I came back to Penang. Needless to say, I have been having too much fun, eating too much good food, and not blogging much at all. The first month of my vacation had been filled with festivities and much celebrations: Chinese New Year, short trips to KL and Singapore, visiting friends and family members, running (driving) around, including meeting Anthony Bourdain and the No Reservations crew, who were shooting in Penang! One month later, I am finally settled into a more relaxed pace and I hope to share more Penang/travel-related photos and posts here with you. First of all, Penang is definitely in spotlight now; it’s fast gaining international attention as a much-happening place and a must-visit island in Southeast Asia. As a result, Rasa Malaysia and the Penang Culinary Tour business my brother and I co-founded had been written up in two travel magazines recently—a very popular Filipino travel magazine Leisure + Adventure Travel as well as a Singapore’s NEXT Magazine (please click on the links to view the articles). Previously, we were featured on Budget Travel USA and SilkAir’s inflight magazine. The highlight of Chinese New Year was the chap goh meh (15th day of Chinese New Year) and my elder brother CK Low got us some durian that were out-of-the-world delicious, creamy, aromatic, and finger-licking good. We made durian rice, served with salted coconut cream, and also bubur cha cha, our family rituals on chap goh meh. Whenever I am in Penang, I love going to the local wet markets, the fresh fish/seafood/produce and the hustle and bustle mesmerize me. I could never get fish as fresh as this in the United States, not mention about the species. One of my favorite breakfast snacks: fried Chinese “hum chim peng”...

Cookbooks are one of the best holiday gifts and this year, many renowned food writers and fellow food bloggers came out with their books, including yours truly. (My first cookbook “Easy Chinese Recipes” is available worldwide and on Amazon.com.) Here are the list of cookbooks you should buy this holiday season, as a gift for friends and family or for yourself. Peko Peko: A Charity Cookbook for Japan Peko Peko is a charity project curated by my good friend Rachel at La Fujimama, together with Marc at No Recipes and Stacie Billis. The cookbook offers a vast collection of homey Japanese dishes. The proceeds of this cookbook will go to GlobalGiving Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. The Sweet Life in Paris I am envious of David Lebovitz because he has the perfect sweet life! He is a mega cookbook author and an A-list food blogger, but more importantly, he is really a very sweet and nice guy. The Sweet Life in Paris chronicles his adventures in the city of lights as well as 50+ original recipes! La Tartine Gourmande Cookbook Believe it when I say this: I have been stalking La Tartine Gourmande for over 5 years. The blog is pure perfection with flawless and gorgeous food photography, great story telling and recipes. The good news is that all the gorgeousness and perfection are now in the form of a cookbook. I have seen the preview pictures and it makes me want to eat the book! The Homesick Texan Cookbook I remember not too long after I landed on my cookbook deal, I exchanged a few tweets with Lisa Fain at Homesick Texan, who was then working on her cookbook. Time flies and her cookbook is now available and a BEST-SELLING cookbook on Amazon. Check it out. On a...
