Petaling Street and Jalan Alor, KL

Hawker food/street food is a big part of Malaysian culture and can be found anywhere in the country. If you are a foreign tourist to KL, don’t miss out Petaling Street and Jalan Alor. A tad touristy, the foods are delectable nonetheless.

Here are some pictures snapped at Jalan Alor and Petaling Street during my whirlwind 36 hours in KL.


Mangosteen–the queen of all fruits–has a milky color flesh which is sweet with just the right tint of sourness.

Claypot Chicken Rice

Claypot chicken rice. This is how the the real stuff are done–with two electric fans fanning the charcoal flame.

  7. I’m surprised the hokkien mee is black (is it fried with sweet sauce or what?). Wow, lucky the covers were still on the claypot…if not, looking at the chicken rice in the claypot would have made me crave. How nice if we could have all these hawker/street food in cooler weather such as in California? :D

    Suane – yeah lah…what we get outside of Malaysia is not the same. Malaysian food is the best. ;)

    Mallika – you will have no idea. I am constantly eating when I am home…every waking hour!

    Tiga – I think it’s darker because of my lousy camera lah…taken at night…but it was quite black, but maybe it’s the wok hei?! CA and street food…hmmm…I don’t think so. :(

    Team BSG – right on…yes, the next time you guys have to pay back by coming up to Penang. Have you read my Tambun post? La La Chong can fight with it or not?

  14. never try the kai si ho fan next to the claypot chicken rice at petaling street? one of the best in its class. miss that..

  17. Hi Bee – we revisited that Portugese fish stall last night for the first time in 4 years. It was a highlight of our first visit to KL but I’m sorry to say that last night’s dinner was horrible. Muddied sauces with no real discernible flavors other than ‘hot’ and – get this – surimi (fake crab) thrown in with our squid and ray! What a bummer. Some things do, unfortunately, change.

  18. to me the best hokkien mee in kl is mun wah hokkien mee at choo cheng khay! no fight for petaling street hokkien mee :p

    But the pesky VCD/DVD peddlers are really a nuisance.. And I used to walk by the colorful open-air restaurant you shown :)
