When it comes to sweet decadent snacks on the island of Oahu, you simply can’t afford to miss out these sinfully sugary and to-die-for malasada, or malassada (the correct spelling)–a confection of Portuguese origin.

We were lucky. Had I not received two emails and a comment from my loyal reader Burt, we would have completely missed out one of the most delightful sweet treats in the whole world! And when I say this, I mean it because I am not much a sweet tooth and don’t even like sweet thing. However, for these puffy, pillowy, fluffy fried dough-balls with outer layer deep-fried to golden crisp and glory, I simply couldn’t resist…

Aloha from Waikiki, O’ahu!

We stumbled upon the world-famous Giovanni’s White Shrimp truck at the north shore of O’ahu today, at Kahuku. Along the drive to the north shore, there are many shrimp trucks selling shrimp scampi, garlic shrimps or shrimp plates; there are also a few road site joints selling live shrimps caught from the nearby shrimp farms. 

Totally unassuming in its appearance and set-up, Giovanni’s shrimp is basically a mobile truck selling shrimps, but their shrimp is known to be the best on the island of O’ahu according to the locals and also many guide books. Plus, a truck load of people waiting eagerly in line for their shrimps can’t be wrong…

This is an example of perfectly cooked pan-fried dumplings (煎饺)–probably one of the best dumplings I have ever tasted (even my Chinese friends were raving about them).

In China, there are many dishes where the name originated from a folklore, legend, or story. Beggar’s Chicken (叫化鸡) is another dish with an interesting history. (Read my post about “Goubuli Baozi/Steamed Pork Buns” to learn about another legendary dish.)
