Spritz Cookies Recipe
What are Spritz cookies? They are traditional Christmas cookies originated from Europe. The word “spritz” came from the German word “spritzen,”, which means “to squirt.”
In short, Spritz cookies are butter cookies made with a cookie press or cookie maker. You can use different kinds of cookie press disks for festive designs.
This recipe is the best Spritz cookies recipe ever! The cookies turn out beautiful and taste sweet, buttery, crumbly and practically melt in your mouth.

How to Make Spritz Cookies?
It’s very easy to make these cookies at home. All you need is a good quality cookie press and a few basic ingredients below:
- Unsalted butter.
- All-purpose flour.
- Powdered sugar.
- Egg yolk.
- Milk.
You can use a stand mixer or hand mixer to make the dough. Once you have a soft dough, chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before making the spritz cookies using a cookie press.
The cookies bake fast in the oven and takes only 15 minutes in the oven.
Baking Tips
- To make sure that the cookies don’t spread while baking, chill the cookie dough in the refrigerator before baking. You can also chill the raw spritz cookies before baking, to retain the shape.
- Use a good cookie press. I recommend OXO Good Grips Cookie Pres.
- If your dough jams in the cookie press or has become too soft to form the shape, chill the cookie dough for 10 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Make Spritz Cookies without a Cookie Press?
You sure can. You can use a pastry bag to pipe and shape dough if you don’t have a spritz cookie maker.
What Kind of Sprinkles Can I Use to Decorate?
You can use all kinds of sprinkles to decorate the cookies. My personal favorites are Betty Crocker Rainbow Sprinkles and Betty Crocker Decorating Decors Nonpareil.
You can also use Betty Crocker Cupcake Gems with red and green pearls.

Makes approximately 5 dozen spritz cookies. I made trees flavored with rum extract and then sandwiched together with Nutella. Excellent. Made 2 1/2 dozen sandwich cookies.
Awesome, that’s such a great idea.
As several others have asked, approximately how many cookies does this recipe make? I did not see the answer anywhere. Thanks.
Susan – I don’t really have the answer. I didn’t count the numbers of cookies as they were out they were gone in minutes. :(
How many cookies does this recipe make?
Hello i made these and the dough was sticky and wouldn’t come off the cookie press so I used a parchment bag and piped them on the parchment paper but they seem very bland and they didn’t rise at all please let e know what i can do to make them better
Thanks Amanda
If the dough is sticky it means they are not mixed well. They shouldn’t be sticking to your hand when the dough is done and ready to be shaped. It sounds as thought the dough wasn’t ready.
You call them bland – I call them delicately flavored. They won’t rise though – that is how they retain the shapes made by the cookie press.
Please tell me what i can use instead of egg as I am allergic to eggs. Thanx! Waiting for your reply as I want to make them soon as I can, can’t wait!
How do you get your sprinkles to stay on the cookies.? Mine always fall off!
I made the cookies tonight and I am sorry but they were not good at all way to dry, 4oz of corn starch equals 8 tablespoons, and I wasted 2 and half sticks of butter, I will not make these again, sorry but it they taste like noting but eating raw flour and corn starch
Hi Leslie, I used 4 oz of cornstarch not sure how many tablespoons. This recipe is super buttery and amazing in taste, it’s not cornstarch and flour taste. I think somewhere in your measurement you did it wrong. You have to use a scale.
I did use a scale and it comes out to 8 Tablespoons, I am just sorry to say, but my mother and father, 14 yr old daughter, husband all thought the same thing.
Too bad that you didn’t enjoy the cookies maybe this recipe is not for you. Many have tried and loved them, it’s actually my favorite cookie recipe ever!
I made these today and found them to be bland. As a former pastry chef, I found the dough and crumb to be quite nice, but lacked any flavor. I will try again subbing almond extract for the vanilla.
I thought the cookies were really good…very buttery and crumbly. But I will try your suggestion. :)
Hi! What should I do if I don’t have a cookie press? Can I just roll the dough?
Hi. Can I check the temp. 350 degrees. Not too sure if my can do up to 350 coz is a microwave oven
Tried this to a T. Indeed bland. Too much flour and cornstarch I guess and not enough sugar. Regret following this recipe :( Will stick with your Danish Butter Cookies instead.
