Wonton Soup Recipe
Wonton soup is one of the most popular Chinese recipes. The soup is nourishing, especially for cold winter months.
What is wonton soup?
It’s a popular soup served at many Chinese restaurants. The hearty soup comes with delicately wrapped wonton in a steaming hot and delicious broth.
Wontons are Chinese dumplings wrapped with wonton wrappers. They are commonly filled with shrimp, ground pork or a combination of shrimp and pork.
Recipe Ingredients
My recipe calls for the following ingredients:
- Shrimp
- Yellow chives. If you can’t find yellow chives, you can use scallions.
- Packaged wonton wrapper. Wonton wrapper is always square in shape and has a light yellow tint to it.
- Low-sodium chicken broth.
How to Make Wonton Soup?
It’s very easy to make the soup from scratch. This is the most authentic and the best recipe, sourced from my best-selling cookbook Easy Chinese Recipes.
The first step is to make the wonton filling. Next, wrap the wonton with the filling using a store-bought wonton wrapper.
The final step is to cook the wrapped wontons in the broth and it is ready!
The Soup Base
You can get instant soup base at Chinese grocery stores but it’s always laden with too much MSG.
My choice for the soup base is low-sodium chicken broth.

Wonton Soup
Ingredients
- 8 oz (230g) peeled and deveined big shrimp
- 1 oz. (30g) yellow chives or scallions (chopped finely)
- 15 Wonton wrappers
- water (for boiling wontons)
Seasonings:
- 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon chicken bouillon powder
- 1/4 teaspoon fish sauce
- 1 pinch salt
- 3 dashes white pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon corn starch
Soup:
- 3 cups low sodium chicken broth
- salt to taste
- white pepper to taste
- sesame oil to taste
Instructions
- Rinse the shrimp and pat dry with paper towels and then cut each shrimp into 3-4 pieces.
- Add half of the chopped yellow chives into the shrimp and marinate with the seasonings for 1 hour.
- Place a wonton wrapper on your palm and put about 1 teaspoon (about 3-4 pieces of the shrimp) filling in the center of the wonton wrapper.
- Dap the corners of the wonton wrapper with water. Fold up and seal to become a triangle shape.
- Gather the two corners of the wrapper with your thumb and index finger on both hands and fold down. pinch in the middle to "seal" the wonton. Make sure the wontons are sealed tight. Repeat until the filling is used up.
- Prepare the soup first by bringing the chicken broth to boil. Add salt, white pepper, and sesame oil to taste.
- Heat up another pot with water. As soon as it boils, drop all wontons into the water. Stirring gently so the wontons don't stick together. Continue to boil until the wontons are completely cooked and float to the top.
- Transfer the wontons out with a strainer and into the soup and serve immediately.

This soup is very tasty, I like it!
Love, love your hot and sour soup and soooo easy to make. The Egg Foo Young is wonderful, have to make that for my grandsons. I get a chuckle out of your story about you first Chinese meal in the Us. I can relate to that. When I first came over from Germany, I was invited to a German meal. I was dying for some sauerkraut and sausage. Needless to say my mouth puckert at the first taste of the Kraut. Oh was it sauer, but being polite, I ate it. Got home called mom and asked for her homemade Sauerkraut. Thank you for all your great recipes. I am a big fan of you and your cooking.
Hi Eva thanks for your sweet comment. I am glad you like my work. Happy cooking!
So glad I tried your wonton soup recipe. I have tried what I found on Google on other blogs and they tasted absolutely horrendous and disgusting. Your wontons are the best, so flavorful and juicy. It’s just like the best restaurants in Hong Kong. Thank you!
Thanks June. You won’t find better Chinese or Asian recipes on other blogs…that’s the fact. Please try more recipes on my site: https://rasamalaysia.com/recipe-index-gallery/

Can I use something else instead of the chicken bouillon powder?
I don’t keep chicken bouillon powder in my pantry. Lol.
Thanks!
Just use a little bit soy sauce.
Awesome! Thank you :)
Soup looks amazing. Can this be made gluten free? Also love the soup bowl. Do you know where to buy one like this?
I forgot where I bought it. Sorry. You need a wheat based wrapper…not sure about GF.
Looks soo good! Can’t wait to try this! What brand are the bowls?/where can I buy them? They are so cute!
I forgot where I bought them. Yes, this is a great wonton soup recipe.
I don’t eat shrimp or pork, so do you use the same seasonings with ground chicken?
Thanks
