How To Make Apple Crisp

Apple crisp is one of the easiest dessert recipes to make at home without any baking experience, and the final result is always guaranteed.

Start with the crumbles by combining all-purpose flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon in a bowl. Mix well and rub the cold butter into it. We used brown sugar instead of granulated white sugar, which helps to enhance the flavor with a touch of caramel taste once baked.

Next, layer half of the flour mixture into a 2 1/2 qt. rectangular baking tray, and top with freshly chopped apples.

Add sugar, cornstarch, water, and vanilla seeds in a saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil. Cook and consistently stirring until it thickens and clears. Then, coat it over apples to add an extra sweetness.

Sprinkle the remaining flour mixture on top, and it’s ready to bake.

Bake the apple crisp in a preheated oven at 356°F (180°C) for 60 minutes until the apples are tender and the top is slightly browned. Serve it warm with ice cream on top if desired.

Baking Tips

For the best result, please follow my tips below.

  • Choose crisp and slightly tart apples, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp. These varieties hold up well during baking and provide a good balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • To prevent chopped apples from browning before assembling the crisp, you can toss them with a little lemon juice.
  • Apple crisp is commonly served warm and pairs well with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or a dollop of Greek yogurt.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to archive a crispy and crumbly topping for the apple crisp?

Use cold butter, straight from the fridge, and cut it into small cubes. Cold butter creates pockets of steam during baking, which helps to create a flaky and crumbly texture.
Rub the cold butter into the dry ingredients (flour, oats, sugar) using your fingertips. The goal is to coat the butter with the dry ingredients, creating a coarse, crumbly mixture. Rub the butter and dry ingredients together until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

What are other good toppings for apple crisp?

Here are some alternative toppings that work well with apple crisp. Chopped nuts like pecans, walnuts, or almonds add a delightful crunch and nutty flavor. Sprinkle them over the apple filling before baking.
