Texas Toast Bread

Texas toast is one of those classic sides that never disappoints—thick, buttery, and full of garlic goodness. It’s a little different from regular bread with its hearty texture and thick slices, and it’s the perfect pairing for just about any pasta dish, whether you’re serving a meaty pasta (such as One Pot Spaghetti with Meat Sauce) or something with Garlic Noodles.

But here’s the twist—I top mine with a cheesy blend that takes this toast to the next level. Trust me, it’s a game changer! It’s perfect as a side or a snack, and once you try it, you’ll be hooked. Be sure to check out my tips and tricks below to make perfect Texas toast bread at home every time!

The Best Recipe You’ll Find Online

Cheesy Texas toast garlic bread with a crispy, golden crust and rich, buttery flavor.

There’s nothing better than warm, cheesy Texas toast bread fresh out of the oven. It’s so easy to make, but it always feels like a treat. Whether I serve it with pasta, soup, or just enjoy a slice on its own, it always hits the spot.

  • Quick and effortless. In just 15 minutes, you can have warm, cheesy Texas Toast on the table and ready to enjoy. It’s a fast, no-fuss recipe that’s perfect for busy days when you need something delicious, stat!
  • Cheesy, garlicky goodness. The buttery garlic flavor combined with that melty cheese topping? It’s a game changer. This isn’t just any toast—it’s packed with flavor in every bite.
  • Way better than store-bought. Forget the store-bought stuff—this homemade version beats it hands down. No preservatives, just fresh, simple ingredients, and all the flavor you crave.

Ingredients You’ll Need

Ingredients for Texas toast.
  • French bread – You may also use Italian bread, which is loaf-shaped and a great substitute for this recipe.
  • Garlic – Use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder.
  • Salted butter
  • Parsley
  • Cheese blend – I used a blend of mozzarella, cheddar, and Monterey Jack for the ultimate meltiness and flavor.

For all the details on each ingredient, be sure to check out the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Sidenote: French bread and baguettes may look similar, but they’re different. French bread is wider, softer, and has a chewy crust, making it perfect for this recipe. It soaks up all that buttery, garlicky goodness. A baguette is longer, thinner, and crispier, with a light, airy inside—great for sandwiches but not the best choice here. For the best texture and flavor, go with French bread!

How To Make Texas Toast

A mixture of garlic, butter, and parsley in a bowl.

Alright, first things first—go ahead and preheat your oven to 400°F (207°C). While that’s warming up, grab a small bowl and mix together the garlic, butter, and parsley. Just stir it all up until it’s nice and combined.

French bread slices coated in the garlic butter parsley mixture.

Now, grab your French bread and slice it into 1-inch thick pieces—don’t worry about being perfect, just aim for a good, hearty thickness. Lay the slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (no mess to clean up later, trust me). Then, take that buttery garlic mixture you made earlier and brush it generously over the bread. You want each slice to be coated in that goodness!

Now, sprinkle that 3-cheese blend over each slice of bread—don’t be shy, pile it on! Pop the tray in the oven on the middle rack and let it bake for about 10 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the cheese is all melty and bubbly.

Once it’s done, take it out and serve it warm. Get ready for some seriously cheesy, garlicky goodness!

Secrets To The Best Texas Toast Garlic Bread

  • The secret to the best garlic toast is all in the garlic parsley butter—it’s what gives every bite that rich, buttery, and garlicky flavor. So make sure to coat each slice evenly for the ultimate taste in every bite.
  • I always use fresh garlic instead of garlic powder. Pureed garlic blends right into the butter, making every bite extra flavorful with that irresistible garlicky aroma.
  • For the cheese topping, I chose Trader Joe’s three-cheese blend of mozzarella, cheddar and Monterey Jack. You can’t go wrong with these three cheeses on a buttery and garlicky toast.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do they call it Texas toast?

As the name suggests, Texas toast was born in, you guessed it, Texas! The story goes that someone ordered thicker bread slices, but they ended up being too big for the toaster. So, they decided to butter them up and grill them instead—and that’s how this buttery, crispy toast was born!

How do I puree the garlic?

To puree garlic, you can either use a grater or a food processor. If you’re using a grater, just peel the garlic and grate it with a fine grater or microplane right into your bowl—it’ll give you a smooth, fine texture. If you’re going the food processor route, simply peel the garlic, toss it in, and blend until smooth.

Can I use a different type of bread?

For the best results, I go with French bread—it’s got the perfect crisp crust and soft interior. But if you don’t have it on hand, Italian bread, sourdough, ciabatta, or even thick-cut white bread will work too.

Can I make this recipe in the air fryer?

Yes! Just set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) and cook for 4-6 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. No need to preheat, but it can help with even cooking. Lay the bread in a single layer—stacking won’t give you that crisp, golden finish. If you’re using parchment paper, make sure it’s perforated so the air can circulate.

Why is my toast soggy?

Sogginess usually happens if too much butter is used or if the bread isn’t baked at a high enough temperature. Make sure to use just enough butter to coat the bread and bake at 400°F (207°C) for crispy edges and a soft center.

How do I store and reheat leftovers?

Store any leftover garlic toast in an airtight container or wrap it in foil and keep it in the fridge for up to 2 days. To reheat, bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes or pop it in the air fryer for a crispier finish. Avoid microwaving, as it can make the bread chewy.

You get the garlic the way you want it by using a garlic press, available at most food specialty stores. Recipe

  3. Sue Chee says:

To use a food processor there would have to be a whole lot of garlic cloves. Perhaps the use of a microplane to grate the garlic finely could be the solution.

    1. Rasa Malaysia says:

      Yes microplane will be great.
