How to Make Salmon Patties?
It’s very easy to cook fish patties using salmon. It’s a simple 3 step process.
First, buy skinless, boneless and fresh salmon fillet. Next, blend the salmon and all the seasoning ingredients together to make a paste.
Finally, shape the paste into balls and flatten them into round patties. You can cook or fry them on a skillet. You can also bake in the oven.
The end results are juicy, moist and absolutely delicious.
Cooking Tips
For the best and juiciest salmon fish cakes, please follow my tips and tricks below:
- Egg yolk is the secret ingredient. After blending the fresh salmon with egg yolk and other seasoning ingredients, the patties will be airy, light and fluffy.
- Lemon juice makes the patties extra juicy. It also reduces and removes the fishy smell of salmon.
- Season well with ground black pepper and cayenne pepper. Both ingredients add mild heat to the salmon cakes.
- For low fat patties, pan fry with a little bit of oil or use an air fryer. You may also bake them in the oven.

We live on a lake and my husband is always catch trout so I used it in this recipe. We love fish cakes but have always found recipes that are full of crackers or bread. This recipe is a winner. The fish flavor comes through nice with a bit of lemon under tones. This will now be my go to recipe for all fish cakes (cod, salmon, trout, etc….). Thank you for sharing with us.
Hi Mary Jo, thanks for trying my recipe. There is absolutely NO reason for adding crackers or bread or breadcrumbs in salmon patties. They do not add any flavors or texture to the fish but make it taste bad. You need to let the natural flavor or fish shines through. I am glad you love my salmon patties, please try more recipes on my site: https://rasamalaysia.com/recipe-index-gallery/
Can I freeze the patties for use a couple days later ?
Will i be able to prepare the patties ahead of time? I am planning a party at home hence i would like to save time on the party day itself. :-)
Yes, you can make the patties ahead of time, shape them and put on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Then pan fry before party.
This salmon patties look amazing and seemingly simple enough to make. Definitely a keeper since my family love fish but sometimes run out of cooking ideas. Any good chili sauce for dipping?
Just buy Thai sweet chili sauce from the supermarket. I like Mae Ploy brand. :)
Tried the salmon patties recipe. It’s so simple and good. I used to make them with canned salmon and a bunch of other ingredients like mayo, celery, onion etc but your recipe is so much easier and taste better! Thanks Bee.

What other fish can I use besides salmon?
Hi Lin, you can try white fish. But it all depends on the texture of the fish it has to be a bid fatty or else it won’t bind. For example: the frozen cod here in the United States won’t work because the fish is so dry and not fatty so it won’t bind.
