  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar (150 g)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (60 g)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (120 mL)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 mL)
  • 1 1/2 cups self-rising flour (180 g)
  • 2-3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced small
  • 1/3 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed (60 g)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon (7.5 mL)


  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 10-inch cake pan with nonstick spray and set aside.
  2. In a KitchenAid Stand Mixer, beat the granulated sugar, butter and egg until combined. Mix in the milk, vanilla extract, self-rising flour and apples. Add apples to your preference.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the top. Use a toothpick to swirl the brown sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Transfer the cake to a rack to cool completely; then cut and serve.

Recipe Notes

Spices, like ground nutmeg and cloves, can also be added to create warmer flavors.
