Apple Coffee Cake Recipe

  • 3/4 cup 150 g granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup 60 g unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup 120 mL milk
  • 1 teaspoon 5 mL vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups 180 g self-rising flour
  • 2-3 Granny Smith apples peeled, cored and diced small
  • 1/3 cup 60 g dark brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons 7.5 mL ground cinnamon


  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Spray a 10-inch cake pan with nonstick spray and set aside.
  2. In a KitchenAid Stand Mixer, beat the granulated sugar, butter and egg until combined. Mix in the milk, vanilla extract, self-rising flour and apples. Add apples to your preference.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon evenly over the top. Use a toothpick to swirl the brown sugar and cinnamon.
  4. Bake for 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Transfer the cake to a rack to cool completely; then cut and serve.

Recipe Notes

Spices, like ground nutmeg and cloves, can also be added to create warmer flavors.
